Banking and investment from abroad
Can a foreigner open a bank account in El Salvador?
What to confirm about identification, tax registration, source of funds and non-resident applications before requesting an account or planning a visit.
Salvadoran banks publish account products with requirements for foreign applicants. Whether a particular account is available depends on the institution, product and applicant’s profile. Before arranging a visit or transferring funds, confirm how the bank will handle your application and what documents it expects.
Start by distinguishing a personal account from a company account. The account holder, intended use and supporting documents should match the transaction you actually plan to undertake.
Residence and identification are separate questions
The Financial System Superintendency explains that banks set specific requirements for their accounts. Some banks list a passport among the identification documents for foreigners. This does not establish that every non-resident applicant will be accepted.Account requirements vary by institution — SSF.
Explain your country of residence and the account’s purpose at the outset. Ask whether the product supports your profile, which connection to El Salvador you must document and whether a visit is required. An answer about acceptable identification does not resolve all those questions.
Check the particular product
Banco Agrícola’s Preferential Savings Account lists a valid passport or resident card, a Salvadoran NIT, and evidence of address and ties to El Salvador. Its page exempts foreign investors from the last two items. Ask how that status is established; do not extend the exemption to other documents.Preferential Savings Account — Banco Agrícola.
Promerica’s Current Account page lists a passport or resident card and NIT for foreigners. These are examples of specific products, rather than a recommendation of a bank or a universal checklist.Current Account — Banco Promerica.
Prepare tax identification and the funding explanation
The Ministry of Finance provides a Digital NIT application process for foreign individuals. Its published instructions direct applicants to the online services available without a password, identification documents and required information. First check whether you already have a NIT and which procedure applies.Digital NIT for individuals — Ministry of Finance.
Banco Agrícola states that it may request additional information depending on the source of funds. Prepare a consistent explanation of the expected payment and its supporting documents. Confirm which evidence the bank needs for your transaction before arranging the transfer.Source-of-funds information — Banco Agrícola.
Keep identification, activity and transaction information consistent across the file. Clear copies and a documented explanation can make questions easier to resolve. Do not attach passports, statements or other sensitive documents to an initial public enquiry.
Confirm what digital opening allows
An account offered through an app can have particular eligibility conditions. Promerica’s Cuenta Inicia, for example, refers to foreigners living in El Salvador. BAC publishes different requirements for its Digital Savings Account and other products. An available app does not establish that every non-resident can complete onboarding from abroad.Cuenta Inicia — Banco Promerica, Account products and requirements — BAC.
If you need an attorney-in-fact, ask whether the bank accepts that arrangement, for which actions and with what authority. Settle those points before preparing the power of attorney. Confirm any originals, translations, authentication and individual signatures the institution expects.
Keep a future company’s account separate
Promerica publishes distinct documentation for legal entities and simplified joint stock companies, including registration, tax identification and representation. A shareholder’s personal account and the company’s account have separate files. Forming a company is not bank approval.Legal-entity and SAS requirements — Banco Promerica.
If the project’s structure is still being decided, coordinate corporate and banking preparation. Identify who will own the funds, who may issue instructions and which business activity will explain the account’s transactions.
A checklist before applying
Use these questions to prepare the discussion with your chosen bank:
- Does this product accept my residence and intended account use?
- Which identification, NIT and supporting documents are required?
- What evidence is needed for the first transfer?
- Must I attend personally, or can an attorney-in-fact assist?
- What conditions, limits and charges apply?
Define the next step
Compass can review legal documents, signing authority and their relationship to an investment or business structure. The bank remains responsible for its account-opening decision.
