Our approach

A process shaped around your circumstances.

Before starting, we review your nationality, immigration status and reason for staying. That assessment helps identify the appropriate application and supporting documents.

Compass Abogados advises on Salvadoran immigration law and assists with the agreed procedures. We confirm the work, responsibilities and fees in writing before the engagement begins.

A defined starting point

An engagement defined in writing.

After understanding the matter and completing initial checks, we propose the scope and deliverables suited to your circumstances. Depending on the engagement, these may include:

  • A written assessment of the category to examine and the points that remain to be confirmed.
  • A list of documents and formalities needed to prepare the application.
  • A description of the applications, submissions and procedures included, with defined responsibilities.
  • A summary of progress, requests and next steps during the agreed follow-up.

The proposal distinguishes legal fees, government charges and third-party expenses. Approval and authority processing times are not guaranteed. The free introductory call does not include legal advice or document review.

Common situations

Start with the reason for your stay.

DGME publishes distinct categories and forms. These scenarios help prepare the conversation; they do not establish eligibility. We review the category, current requirements and scope appropriate to your circumstances.

01

Working in El Salvador

We review the intended activity and employment relationship. Work authorization needs specific attention; you should not assume that every residency category permits paid work.

02

Investing or developing a business

We clarify your role in the project and available documents to assess categories such as investor, business or shareholder. Immigration and business advice are coordinated under distinct scopes.

03

Living on a pension or other income

DGME distinguishes pensioners from income-based applicants (rentistas). We organize a review of the income source and supporting documents before identifying which option to assess.

04

Accompanying or joining family

We review the family relationship and the immigration status of those involved. Accompanying a resident and being married to or cohabiting with a Salvadoran national involve different circumstances to examine.

05

Studying in the country

We review the study plans, institution and available documents to assess the relevant category and permission. Academic admission does not replace that review.

06

Renewing or responding to a notice

We start with the current residency document, application file and communications received. If expiry is approaching or a notice has arrived, request a direct review of the deadline and applicable procedure.

How we work

Documents and decisions in a clear sequence.

The introductory call helps us understand your objective. Legal advice and document review begin after conflict and compliance checks and written acceptance of the engagement.

  1. 01

    Assess

We understand your immigration status, reason for staying and current stage to identify what needs review.

  2. 02

    Define the scope

We confirm the procedures, deliverables, responsibilities and engagement terms in writing.

  3. 03

    Prepare and submit

We identify documents, formalities and outstanding items, confirming what can be prepared remotely and what requires personal attendance. We prepare and submit the agreed applications when the file is ready.

  4. 04

    Follow up

We communicate progress and requests, and explain the next steps arising from the authority’s actions.

Compass Abogados provides immigration advice and assists with the procedures covered by the engagement. The proposal identifies the information required, responsibilities and how progress will be communicated.

Advice is available in Spanish and English. If your plans also require corporate or real estate work, we can organize those services within a proposal that defines responsibilities and deliverables.

Please share only a brief, non-confidential description in your initial contact. Documents are requested after identity, parties and potential conflicts have been checked.

FAQ

Questions about residency in El Salvador.

Which residency category applies to me?

Start with the reason for staying: work, investment or business, pension or other income, family or studies, among others. We compare that purpose with your nationality, current status and the DGME form. Selecting a category by name is not enough; its basis and supporting documents need review.

What can I prepare before travelling?

We can arrange an initial review remotely and prepare a document list for your circumstances. List what you already hold: a passport, documents supporting the reason for staying and any prior immigration correspondence. Before ordering certificates or paying for translations, let us confirm what is needed, where it is issued and its validity. This does not mean the entire process can be completed without travel.

Do my foreign documents need an apostille or translation?

We review the issuing country and authority for each document to determine the applicable apostille or legalization process. We also check the formalities for translation into Spanish where needed. An apostille is not a translation or validation of the contents; both issues should be confirmed before you incur costs.

Does residency allow me to work?

Your immigration status and the relevant permission must be checked against the activity you intend to undertake. DGME distinguishes temporary residency with work authorization and warns against paid work without the corresponding permission. Mention your intention to work during the consultation, even if family or investment also motivates the move.

How long does the process take?

Separate document preparation, filing, authority assessment and any further requests. After reviewing the file, we identify what depends on you, the firm and third parties. We do not promise a decision date or recommend making irreversible commitments based on an approval that is still pending.

What if my residency expires soon or I have received a notice?

Request a direct review and explain that an expiry date or communication needs attention, without sending confidential information through the initial form. For the private review, prepare the residency document and the complete notice, including when it was received. We need to check the deadline and distinguish a renewal, permanent-residency card renewal, category change or response to a request.

Can residency work be coordinated with an investment or property purchase?

We can review these matters together under distinct scopes. The residency category and application require their own assessment and remain subject to the immigration authority’s decision.

Can Compass assist with my residency application?

Yes. Compass Abogados provides Salvadoran immigration advice and can assist with the preparation, filing and follow-up agreed for the matter. The procedures and actions covered are confirmed in writing in the service proposal.
